Wiggly Wonders in Pre-K: Exploring Composting and Ecosystems

As part of their How the World Works unit of inquiry, our curious Pre-K students have taken a hands-on approach to understanding composting and the role of living organisms in nature’s recycling system.

This week, students welcomed red wigglers—special composting worms—into their classroom. These tiny new friends are helping break down food scraps into nutrient-rich soil, giving our young learners the chance to observe decomposition, life cycles, and the interconnectedness of ecosystems up close.

Through daily care, food sorting, and observation, students are not only developing scientific understanding, but also practicing empathy, responsibility, and environmental stewardship. Their excitement is contagious, with questions like “Why do worms like banana peels?” leading to deeper inquiry and classroom discussions.

We look forward to seeing how this composting project continues to grow—along with our students’ appreciation for the natural world!
