Using Jo Boaler’s Mathematical Mindset approach to teaching math concepts, G4 students created a number line of fractional values to measure objects and apply fractions. This aligned with our study of equivalent fractions, mixed numbers, and improper fractions, building further our growing confidence to place numbers on scales and label axes in graphs.
Here is a great example of what we were able to produce:
The students are given long strips of paper of mixed length, a minimum of 50cm long.
From this, they were able to fold, cut and extend the strips accordingly, and decide on the fraction divisions on the number line.
Then, the students set about choosing homeroom objects of different length using their fraction measuring tape. When they selected an object longer than their fraction measuring strips, what would they do?
They then made decisions about how to record and present their learning. Here are two examples:
