ISD Celebrates International Mother Language Day on February 15th

International Mother Language Day is celebrated on 21 February commemorating the sacrifices that were made by the language Martyrs in the Bangladesh Language Movement. The Language Movement, which was a significant protest against the imposition of Urdu as the only state language of East Pakistan, took place in Bangladesh in 1952. Demonstrators demanded that Bengali be given equal status as the state language which later turned into a tragic event when several protesters were martyred during a demonstration, therefore solidifying the role of the Bengali language in Bangladesh’s political and cultural identity. To honor the sacrifices made on February 21, 1952, during the Language Movement in Bangladesh, and to encourage linguistic and cultural diversity, UNESCO declared International Mother Language Day.

International Mother Language Day holds profound significance in Bangladesh and around the world, commemorating linguistic diversity and the importance of preserving mother languages. At International School Dhaka, we recognize the value of linguistic and cultural diversity in shaping our students’ identities and fostering understanding among communities.

ISD students have been preparing diligently to showcase the beauty and richness of various languages through a series of engaging performances, presentations, and cultural displays in a heartwarming celebration of diversity that unites our global community.
