It was a pleasure introducing the World Scholars Cup (WSC) at International School Dhaka (ISD) this year. The World Scholar’s Cup may look like a competition but isn’t one at all. It’s a celebration of learning. It brings together many subjects, because before we can begin to specialize, we need to see the big picture.
It challenges teams to work together, because there’s nothing harder or more inspiring than knowing that someone else depends on you. And it deals with serious global issues without taking itself too seriously. The World Scholar’s Cup is: inclusive, encouraging, interdisciplinary, discussion-based, forward-looking, team-oriented and last but not the least whimsical.
This year 17 students from ISD; 13 from Grade 8, 2 from Grade 9 and 2 from Grade 10 participated in the WSC. It was a great learning experience for our students as they had to compete through four different rounds: Team Debate, Collaborative Writing, Scholars Challenge and Scholars Bowl. The subjects in focus were Art & Music, Literature & Media, Science & Technology, Social Studies, Special Area, and History. Some of the skills our students could develop through participation in WSC are debating/communication skill, critically thinking skill, research skill, collaboration/social skill, self-management skill and above all they experienced new challenges and made new friends. Two of our students were also selected as one of the best debaters to participate in the Debate Showcase event where 8 best debaters of the event were selected to debate on stage in front of everyone.
It gives me great pleasure to inform that all our students received several silver and gold medals in various categories and that all our students have qualified for the World Scholars Cup Global Round. We can join any one of the Global Rounds planned between June and September 2024 in-order-to qualify for “The Tournament of Champions” at the Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, US.
