Secondary Visual Art
Ramadan Mubarak everyone! As we continue this school year, in our virtual setting, the secondary visual arts team have been truly blessed to see the creativity and deep thinking that your children have continued to display in the artworks that they have created.
This feat cannot be credited just to the teachers and the school, it is a true testament of the supportive home environment and hard work of our students. On behalf of the visual arts teachers, I would like to extend our sincere gratitude and appreciation for your role in supporting the students to turn their home environment into art studios. Thank you for putting up with the ongoing requests for unusual art supplies, I can imagine you have also faced clean-up challenges after the projects were made.
The Grade 6 and 7 students experimented with three dimensional media to produce masks and decorative containers. The Grade 8 students learnt about Still Life and created an Still Life artwork in any media of their choice. The Grade 9 students focused on how to visually represent intangible nouns. The Grade 10 students learned about expressionism and how they can express an emotion they have experienced in the current state they are in.

The meaning behind my artwork is that we are all connected, we all stand on the earth together and we always will. I enjoy sketching flowers and I thought that it would be a good representation of us all being together. The deep blue on white is calming so I chose it. The flowers represent everyone in the world standing together.

The objects depicted in my artwork are all related to school. The colors are intentionally bright to symbolise childhood and playfulness. The background is a slightly more neutral color, it is a duller shade of blue because the background is not the focus of the art. I drew a sketch freehand on paper and then scanned the paper to turn it into an image. I then traced the sketch digitally. After that, I colored and shaded the sketch with a digital pen.

This artwork portrays emotions during the lockdown. There was a range of emotions which I felt but I wanted to portray the emotion of ‘Despair’ by using colors such as red and green because they are opposite of each other creating an unsettling, uncomfortable feel towards the artwork. I developed and sharpened my digital art skill and manipulated gaussian blur and multiplying.

The meaning behind the artwork is to show how people portray their inner thoughts and feelings. The real life situation that inspired my work is Covid-19. During this pandemic the main feeling many felt was sadness of people’s death and not to be able to go outside for a very long time. Through the use of thoughts and gestures I used to show how a person feels sad while thinking of the outside world. To create this Expressionistic artwork I used colors, exaggeration and gestures. In expressionistic art darker colors such as blues and blacks are used to show deeper feelings. Using the gesture of keep your head down, I showed that the girl is feeling sad. The elements of art used in this artwork are lines, colors and value. There are exaggerated lines all through the silhouette which was added to create style and to use up the extra negative space.

The meaning of my artwork is to express several feelings we are going through during this lockdown. I used different symbols on my artwork as you can see there are three small square boxes and each box has a symbol of each emotion. The gray box represents anxiety, yellow box represents frustration and the purple one represents fear. In addition there are two swords which represent attacking. The biggest influence that inspired me to create my artwork is the current situation all over the world. As we know we all are going through a difficult time due to Covid-19, and many of us are staying in lockdown for our safety. In lockdown different people are facing different kinds of emotions such as fear, anxiety, frustration. Those who are always used to going outside are getting extremely frustrated at home. The people who are more scared of the virus are always in fear of the virus and which is causing severe anxiety. In addition when we see simple coronavirus symptoms such as coughing breathing issues, fever etc we are becoming more anxious. To create the artwork, I took enough time to paint and not rush to finish. To sketch the symbols and objects I used pencil very lightly so that it stays clean and when I erase it to fix something it won’t look dusty. The process that I used while coloring my artwork is that I always color the background and then the middle part so that it doesn’t go out of the margin. The skill that I always try to use is my creativity skills so that I can bring out my creativity and represent it in my artwork. Some of the art elements I have used in my artwork are color value and texture. Color because my artwork is very colorful and I have used different colors for different parts of my artwork to express. Texture because there are several textures on my artwork because I used mixed media and each different media gave my artwork a different texture of color and look. Value because there is a combination of lightness and darkness on my artwork which expressed different emotions.

This Expressionistic piece dives into self discovery and understanding who I am as a person throughout the period of time I was affected with covid. It shows the different types of personalities that were in my head through the distorted human-like line figures while also showing exaggeration in the emotions through the split of main subjects face while giving the audience a sense of realization of their own thoughts. My inspiration was mainly drawn from the bright colours and aggressive brush strokes used by german expressionist Franz Marc. Some elements of art would be texture, shown through the bright orange cotton. Contrast, shown through the different colours used such as emerald green amidst jet black hair. Value, through the dark to light blue effect on the background. Lastly, line, through the distorted figures that represent the inner thoughts and emotions of the subject.
