“The art and science of asking questions is the source of all knowledge”- Thomas Berger

It is clear from the above quote that one way to obtain knowledge is by asking questions. We attain knowledge when we inquire or interrogate. In this case, we engage with issues and ideas that critically explore concepts that have both a local and global significance.

The IB Diploma Programme (DP) at International School Dhaka (ISD) is a rigorous two year programme that is widely recognized for excellence but at the same time the DP allows students to pursue their areas of interest and receive the support and guidance to be successful at the end of grade 12. The DP faculty supports learners to be knowledgeable by doing the following;

  • Embedding Inquiry cycle into the DP unit plans whereby there is transformation of information resulting in in- depth knowledge. In the end the learner takes action and responsibility for what is learned.
  • Teachers create a collaborative learning environment whereby students share what they know and also learn from each other. Hence, learners are given a voice and also choices especially when selecting their topics for Internal Assessment (IAs) in various DP subjects, Extended Essays, Theory of Knowledge tasks (essays and exhibitions) and Creativity Activity Services (CAS). They also get a chance to reflect on their learning.
  • In DP we offer different learning styles including experiential learning. In this case, outdoor learning reinforces the concepts taught in class. ISD has a scheduled Week Without Walls (WWW), subject specific educational trips and grade level retreats.
  • There is usually no wrong or right answer. All learners in DP classes are given a chance to participate in a way that they feel comfortable.
  • IB training is mandatory for for all DP teachers and ISD arranges for workshops each year to grow and develop teachers.
  • ISD celebrates student achievements in the IB Learner Profile (LP) whereby ‘Knowledgeable’ is one of the traits that is commemorated.
