Today a Reader, Tomorrow a Leader
The love of reading is one of the most important things we can gift a child with. Reading truly is a skill that informs most if not all areas of the curriculum and arguably life. We are all readers, we read emails daily, posts on social media, newspaper articles on how our cricket team performed and even the most simple things such as road signs or even the label for the men or ladies bathroom… now getting that wrong would be embarrassing!
Statistically, reading is almost a guaranteed ticket to being successful in your academics. Research shows that reading for 20 minutes a day equates to 3600 minutes of reading in a year, which in turn adds up to 1.8 million words being consumed! Experts predict that if you are showing these reading habits, you are very likely to be in the top 10% of students in standardized assessments. On the flip side, reading for only 5 minutes a day, will result in you being in the middle of the road in regards to your academic performance and sadly, if you are hardly reading, it is very likely that you will find school difficult and the educational gap will continue to widen and widen.
With this, I would encourage you all to get cosy, turn the TV off or put the phone down and pick up a book with your son or daughter. Something that they really enjoy. And let the magic of a good book wash over you.
